Issue 2 - June 2015

Congregation Adas Yeshurun is fortunate to have a wonderfully diverse and dynamic membership.  In this section, we will devote space to getting to know our members, both young, and younger!  We are grateful to Aaron and Shira Breen and to Nachi and Chani Stein for agreeing to be featured in this month's column.

Aaron and Shira Breen

Mazel tov to Shira and Aaron Breen who recently celebrated the birth of their son!  Here are some highlights from our conversation with Shira and Aaron.

Q:  Tell us about yourselves and where you’re from.

Shira:  I am from Pittsburgh and came to Chicago 11 years ago to attend TI.  I then went to law school and am currently in-house legal counsel for a skilled nursing facility.

Aaron: I grew up in New Orleans, went to college there at the University of New Orleans, and then moved up here in 2007  I am currently the controller for a seafood importer.

Q:  Where did the two of you meet?

Shira and Aaron:  We met in Pittsburgh two years ago when Aaron was visiting there.  There was a last minute change in plans that resulted in an introduction for Aaron to a new family who in turn connected us together.

Q:  What hobbies do you make time for?

Aaron and Shira:  Aaron is active with bowling leagues and Shira enjoys exercising.

Q:  In addition to travel to Israel, what are some of your ideal travel destinations?

Shira and Aaron:  Gibraltar and Venice are on our travel wish list.

Q:  Tell us how you connected to Yeshurun and aspects of the shul that you particularly like?

We were connected to Yeshurun through Chani Abramchik and like the inclusive nature of Yeshurun.  We like Rabbi Cohen, and we also like the diversity of the Yeshurun community.

Nachi and Chani Stein

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Nachum Stein whose wife, Chani, was unavailable at the time of the interview.

Q:  Where are you from originally?

Reb Nachi:  I am from Chicago, born at Mt. Sinai Hosptial, and attended Albany Park Hebrew Day School.  My father was from Chicago, too. Chani is from Detroit.

Q:  How did you meet?

Reb Nachi:  We were introduced by Chani’s friend Mrs. Keller.

Q:  Tell us about your family.

Reb Nachi:  We have 5 kids, 3 are in Chicago, 1 is in Baltimore and 1 in Detroit.

Q:  What are your hobbies?

Reb Nachi:  My hobbies include Pirchei and fishing!  As for Chani, she is an avid reader.  Together, we enjoy traveling, including winter trips to Orlando and to South Haven in the summer.

Q:  How did you get involved with Pirchei?

Reb Nachi:  After returning home from Telshe Yeshiva in Wickliffe (Cleveland), I discussed with Rabbi Levin (current Rosh Yeshiva of Telshe Chicago) the lack of learning programs for boys on Shabbos, and with his support, Pirchei Chicago was born.

Q:  What attracts you to Adas Yeshurun?

Reb Nachi:  We moved closer to Touhy when we became empty nesters and thought we would try the various shuls in our area.  Yeshurun was the first shul we tried, and once I heard Rabbi Cohen’s dvar Torah, we were done searching for a shul – Yeshurun was it!

Author's note: You may be familiar with Reb Nachi as he is the Chicago powerhouse behind Pirchei.  For those unfamiliar, Pirchei provides many learning opportunities for boys.  You may have seen the Thursday night bus in front of Yeshurun which transports boys to Telshe Chicago to learn with Chevrusas arranged by Reb Nachi.  Pirchei also encourages learning through Shabbos learning programs (at Yeshurun and other area shuls) and also at various times throughout the year, incenting boys with an enjoyable learning experience and often with prizes, too.  If that’s not enough, there is also the Midwest Siyum Mishnayos held once per year in rotating cities, including Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Indiana.  An enormous number of families have been beneficiaries of these programs (ours included), and some even remember having Reb Nachi himself as their Pirchei group leader.

Issue 1 - April 2015

Congregation Adas Yeshurun is fortunate to have a wonderfully diverse and dynamic membership.  In this section, we will devote space to getting to know our members, both young, and younger!  We are grateful to Mrs. Leah Mann and to Shosh and Dovid Friedman for agreeing to be featured in this week’s inaugural column.

Shosh and Dovid Friedman

Q:  Tell us about you and your family.
Our family includes Dovid & Shosh and our kids Kivi, Donny, Tova and Ezra.

Q:  Where did you both grow up?
Shosh: I grew up in Milwaukee and at 14, came to Chicago and boarded here (until my family moved to Skokie 2 years later) to attend Ida Crown for high school.
Dovid: Born and raised in West Rogers Park! My parents still live in the house I grew up in on Estes.

Q:  What kind of work do you do?

Shosh: I work as the Regional Programs Coordinator for NCSY. I plan Shabbatonim for teens across the Midwest and organize other programs in the Chicagoland area.

Dovid: I work as the Director of Plant Operations for a nursing home management company, managing construction and improvement projects for the homes.

Q:  With such a busy schedule, do you have the opportunity to take time off and travel?

We love to travel as a family as much as we can and spend time together without any of the distractions of everyday life! And we love to expose our kids to the beauty of Hashem's world! This past summer we visited Niagara Falls - both the Canadian and American sides are beautiful to see!

Q:  Do you have family milestones that are upcoming?

Yes!  We're looking forward to Kivi's Bar Mitzvah this coming November iy'h. We've been davening at Yeshurun since Kivi was 2 years old and we can't believe we're already at this point!  We're excited to share this milestone with the Yeshurun community.

Q: What drew you to Yeshurun?

We originally joined as founding members of the Young Adult Minyan.  Yeshurun is really a community shul - with so many choices of minyanim times, shiurim, etc.  We've come to really appreciate how much the shul has to offer and its diversity is something special. We and our children have the opportunity to form relationships with many different people. We also love the Carlebach minyan on Friday nights!

Mrs. Leah Mann

Q:  Where are you from originally?

Mrs. Mann:  I was born in Czechoslovakia and came to Chicago at the age of 4.  My father, Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Berger, was the rabbi of Ahavas Achim.  I’ve been a West Rogers Park resident for more than 60 years!

Q:  What kinds of interesting jobs have you had over the years?

Mrs. Mann:  I was a Hebrew school teacher at one point.  Later, my husband, Jack a”h and I owned a dress business and had a showroom in New York.  I managed the Sales for the business.

Q:  Among your many special talents, is there one in particular that you would highlight?

Mrs. Mann:  Yes, baking was a specialty.  In fact, I used to bake mondel bread and bring it to our New York showroom.  Our customers would insist on mondel bread first, business second!”

Q:  It is a joy to hear so many mazel tovs extended to you in our shul announcements.  How many generations are there?

Mrs. Mann:  B”H we are now 5 generations with the recent birth of twin great great grandsons.  I have been truly blessed to come from a wonderful family and to have wonderful children married to lovely spouses with families that are leading Torah observant lives.

Q:  What about Yeshurun do you love?

Mrs. Mann:  Our terrific rabbi!  Also, it’s an honor to have Rabbi Schwartz as part of our minyan, and it’s a very friendly place to be.

Author’s note:  Shabbos and Yomim Tovim at Yeshurun are enhanced by Mrs. Mann and her outgoing nature, vibrant spirit, and wishes of Good Shabbos to old friends and new members – inspiring us all.
